The Progress Energy Foundation grants the Science Center of Pinellas $25,000 to continue energy related curriculum in the “Progress Energy at the Center” laboratory classroom for the 2009 -2010 school year. The classroom is furnished with energy-themed educational resources and teaching tools. Students learn energy concepts, energy conservation, and about alternative energy. “The Science Center is pleased to continue our partnership with Progress Energy Florida and to be in a position to educate our students on the importance of energy and the future of energy. We are very proud and pleased to have the support of the Progress Energy Foundation,” said Joseph Cuenco, the Executive Director of the Science Center.

In October, the Science Center of Pinellas will be celebrating its 50th year of student education and extension of the school classrooms. During the 2008-2009 school year, almost 33,000 students from Pinellas county schools received hand-on instruction from the Center.

By popular demand, Professor Daryl Schrader of St. Petersburg College will be lecturing on the Planet Jupiter and cosmology.
A major feature of this event will be to collect student’s (and family) names to be included on a microchip that NASA will send to Mars as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, scheduled to launch in 2011. Participants will truly be part of Mars history. A certificate will be provided to the registrants.
As part of our monthly Sci-fi and Sky event, we will also be featuring the film “2010” in our rear courtyard. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs! In efforts to further the exposure to astronomy, science, and technology, planetarium shows will be shown until 9:00 pm.
